History of the Washington Monument
Construction began in 1848 during James Polk's term as President. The monument was finally completed and dedicated on February 21, 1885.. Made of granite, marble and sandstone, plannerPierre Charles L'Enfant situated this landmark to form a perfect cross upon the landscape, with The White House to the North, the Jefferson Memorial to the South,the Capitol to the East, and theLincoln Memorial to the West.
Inside, there are 898 steps and 50 landings. When the cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848, the Holy Bible was deposited within it along with other items.
The Secret of the Washington Monument
High above the obelisk, the East side of the aluminum cap on the Washington Monument bears two words facing skyward: Laus Deo! Unnoticed by the public, these two Latin words are placed at the highest point of the most powerful city, and in the most successful nation in the world. "Laus Deo" translated is "Praise be to God!"
